We proudly offer AIA courses for approved continuing education unit (CEU) credits.

Our courses are presented live via screenshare. Once the course is complete, we’ll submit authentication of your attendance to the AIA. Other certifications (CLD, IDCEC, IIDA, NCQLP) are self-reporting

Light & Us: Human Evolution Under Light

credits: 1-hour for AIA Health, Safety, Welfare CEU and NCQLP LC CEU
George Bosson

About the Course:

During the course of human evolution, exposure to natural lighting conditions has conditioned neurological stimuli that regulate numerous biological functions. Circadian Rhythm, rooted in the Latin for “around the day”, is a term describing the entrained cyclical processes used to sustain most living organisms. The changing spectral distribution characteristics of the sun and the onset of night have been a key influence on how the retina has evolved to become a primary source of sensory stimulus effecting the production and inhibition of hormones essential to Circadian balance. Disruption of Circadian Rhythm (our natural cycles) can have deleterious effects on our health and wellbeing, particularly our patterns of sleep. Many of our built environments have created unnatural conditions for its occupants. Research has shown that poor illumination, of the spaces we occupy, can contribute to the disruption of our natural cycles. With the advent of Solid State Lighting (LED) and “nature emulating design” we can transform the environments that we occupy. This course explores ways of applying Circadian Balanced Illumination™, Biophilic Design, and WELL Building lighting principles to invigorate the human condition and benefit our cognition, health and wellbeing.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how natural light has contributed to the entrainment our circadian rhythm
  • Identify the visual and biological processing functions of the retina
  • Learn how light affects attentiveness and human sleep patterns
  • Learn how Circadian Balanced Illumination™, biophilic and WELL design improve the health and wellbeing of people in the built environment

George C Bosson founded A-Light Architectural Lighting. George has 29 years of experience in architectural lighting. He served as Chief of Operations with Elliptipar (now The Lighting Quotient), was the General Manager of LAM Lighting, & is now the Chief Spiritual Officer for LIGHTGLASS. Recognized by the IES as an innovator in lighting development, George has received numerous design awards including the Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum and Product of the year from Interior Design magazine. In 2013, George founded Be*light Management, a product development consultation.
